Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and E-testTM

MIC - Macrodilution MIC - Macrodilution breakpoint
MIC - Macrodilution. Defined aliquots of bacteria are inoculated into a nutrient broth containing a dilution series of antibiotic concentrations (in this case, Staph aureus and tetracycline). MIC - Macrodilution. In this case, bacterial growth occurred at a Tetracycline concentration of 0.8 mcg/ml but not at 1.6 mcg/ml. Thus, the minimum inhibitory concentration is read as 1.6 mcg/ml.
MIC - ETest MIC - ETest close-up MIC - ETest meniscus
ETest. This commercially-prepared strip creates a gradient of antibiotic concentration when placed on an agar plate ETest strip close-up ETest meniscus - the MIC corresponds to the point where the bacterial growth crosses the numbered strip.
